Tom King, on the difficulty writing Wonder Woman.

Speaking with PopverseSpeaking with Popverse about his upcoming Wonder Woman series, writer Tom King discussed the creative difficulties of writing the Amazonian superhero, calling her "the hardest mainstream character" he has written, in part because, "she was created in a different time and place by a man who had a very specific agenda."

Writer Tom King On The Complexities Of Writing Contemporary Wonder Woman Stories On approaching a contemporary Wonder Woman story, Tom King said the character has been "revamped so many times" that everything about Diana Prince – her villains, her sidekicks, her history – has become "very convoluted." He contrasted writing Wonder Woman with other major DC heroes, saying, "Most characters, you can take back to their origin story, if you have a lot of convolution.

The Answer To Wonder Woman's Convoluted History Is Not Her Origin Story Under the pen name Charles Moulton, writer and psychologist William Moulton Marston created Wonder Woman in 1941, as a counterpoint to the era's archetype of a submissive woman, an anti-damsel-in-distress. Marston's ideas, and lifestyle choices, were wildly ahead of his time – and his creation of the now-iconic character was a way of proselytizing these choices, the result of an ideological agenda.

Instead, Tom King the next writer tasked with moving the character of Wonder Woman forward into the future, of detaching the character from outdated, sexualized portrayals of female superheroes that has long held sway in the comic book industry, giving Wonder Woman the opportunity to exist in a more grounded narrative, to make it more clear than ever that she is "the best character in the DC Universe," as well as one of the most dangerous.
