A Russian chess player is facing jailtime and a possible lifetime ban from the sport after poisoning a younger rival.

A Russian chess player is facing jailtime and a possible lifetime ban from the sport after allegedly trying to poison a rival.

Security footage from the Dagestani Chess Championships, in the Russian republic of Dagestan on August 2, showed Amina Abakarova approach a table and appear to place something on the pieces on the chess board.Police allege Abakarova took a vial of mercury from a thermometer and smeared it across the pieces Osmanova was using in her game.

According to United 24 Media, Abakarova told other attendees at the event that her 30-year-old rival had said "nasty things about her and her relatives behind her back" and the attack was intended to "scare" Osmanova, not kill her. Osmanova was well enough after receiving medical attention and was able to finish playing, coming in runner up in the tournament.

The Russian Chess Federation is assisting police with their investigation and Abakarova is facing a minimum three years jail and likely lifetime ban from competing professionally in chess.
