"We tend to listen to voices who look and sound like ourselves," Fenton said."But there's a lot of education and things that we can learn by simply switching up our feed and making sure that it is as diverse in perspectives as the world around us.

"The reality is that Black people have either less access to health care, or worse experiences in health care or delayed detection of their conditions," Fenton said. She encouraged doctors of all races and ethnicities to become more vocal, acknowledging and addressing patterns in which different groups, especially African Americans, are treated in health care.

"If I just do my job as a physician without adding in the experiences that I've had to deconstruct these issues, then I have the same potential to see those inequities in my care, even as a Black physician."
