The Clare legend landed a second All-Ireland at the weekend after overcoming a fear of exposing himself to hurling again following a concussion that saw him out of work for six weeks back in 2021.
From the “total, bitter disappointment” of all the mornings he woke up after being knocked out of the Championship, as well as losing five Munster finals, to the “incredible” feeling of landing a second All-Ireland title at the weekend.
His second All-Ireland triumph, he says, was “definitely sweeter” and he’s going to enjoy it all the more for it. His partner Niamh, a psychologist, reassured O’Donnell and helped him plot a path back from a dark time. "Because you're not seeing any improvement. In fact, you're seeing the opposite. On top of that, there's no reprieve from it.
“If you don't fully recover and you take another one while you're still dealing with the symptoms from the first one. “She just said that, even if you decide not to go back, this is going to be lingering over you. You're not going to be able to clear it.
