A man, described as an active presence in Mission community groups, was shot and killed Friday afternoon within the Mission Rec Center.

Carillo arrived on the scene to see the Rec Center blocked off by crime scene investigators, he said. He did not know what occurred inside and could not share details of the shooting, but said the victim was a “youngster well-known to the community.”

Mission community members said the victim had been closely involved with the Latino Task Force on 18th Street and was still active with Mission organizing; he had recently helped with a book give-away with the public library. The victim’s partner was pregnant, sources said. The man sits around speaking on his cell phone, according to Chandler, occasionally peering out at the street. Chandler said that at 3:11 p.m., the man entered a silver “SUV type” car that sped off towards Alabama and 22nd streets.
