'We're losing a theater that's among the last of its kind.'
Originally, Grannell was slated to host “Drag Becomes Her” with “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alumni Jinkx Monsoon and BenDeLaCreme in March 2020, but the show was rescheduled to this February because of the pandemic. As the omicron variant emerged, Grannell reached out to the Castro’s management to discuss the status of the event but said he didn’t receive a reply and ultimately made the decision to postpone the event on his own.“It was a bit shocking,” he said.
Grannell added that a representative from Another Planet Entertainment has since reached out to discuss a collaboration on his scheduled event, but the future remains murky. “At a time when we are all losing so much, it’s hard to find the silver lining. I’m cautiously optimistic because I feel that’s the best thing we can be at this point,” he said. “My hope is that Another Planet does the right thing and works with the community to maintain the integrity of what makes that place so special.
Grannell thinks the venue certainly has the capacity to foster both, noting similar spaces hosting hybrid events like the Victoria Theatre in the Mission.The Castro did not immediately respond to SFGATE for comment.Top Picks In Shopping
