'I ordered the Hong Kong-style pork chop plate and spent less than $7. Is this the cheapest meal in San Francisco?'
The pork chop Hong Kong-style is one of the popular dishes at Super Star Restaurant in San Francisco's Excelsior District, shown Oct. 25, 2022.There aren’t many restaurants in San Francisco that can feed an entire neighborhood. Super Star Restaurant, at 4919 Mission St. in the Excelsior District, is one of the few — the last of a dying breed.I arrived at about 11:45 a.m. to scope out the scene as a first-time customer.
Suddenly, business started to pick up. While I was busy taking in the scenery, six people had already lined up inside and were waiting for their orders. Then, another four joined the growing line to order. As I waited for my lunch, more orders for pork chop meals poured in, alongside requests for the bangus combo, longsilog — a common Filipino breakfast dish with longanisa, egg and garlic fried rice.
A quiet hunger appeared to settle over the crowd, the pounding rhythms that escaped the kitchen were promising signs that food was on its way soon.
