San Francisco police shot a man holding a knife at a Richmond District home early Thursday morning who later died of his injuries at a nearby hospital.

Authorities responded to a report of an aggravated assault at a home on the 700 block of 31st Avenue at 2:39 a.m. on Thursday, according to a police release.

While officers interacted with an 84-year-old man in the doorway of the home, police said a 37-year-old man armed with a knife"advanced toward the officer" and elderly man, prompting police to shoot him. Inside the home, officers found a dead 76-year-old woman, whom the elderly man said that the armed man had assaulted, and a dead dog. The elderly man was hospitalized with injuries that weren't life-threatening."This is a tragic incident, and together we mourn the loss of life," San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan, who represents the district where the shooting occurred, said in a statement."When one household is hurt, our entire community is impacted.

"We are expecting more details of the incident to be released to the public as the investigation continues to unfold," she continued."I'm in close communication with our Police Department and Richmond District Police Station, our shared goal will continue to drive us working together to ensure the Richmond is safe."

The San Francisco Police Department is required to hold a public town hall within 10 days of the shooting. Officials haven't announced when that hearing will be.
