The Giants are also determining the best ways to honor members of their 2010, 2012 and 2014 World Series championship teams.
Clark, 57, was selected No. 2 overall by the Giants in the 1985 MLB Draft out of Mississippi State. In his first major league at-bat in 1986, the power-hitting first baseman launched a home run off Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan.
“To be forever linked with the greatest who have ever played this sport here in San Francisco, it’s absolutely amazing,” Clark said. In the coming years, the Giants will likely retire a handful of other numbers as the team looks for ways to honor the most successful players from its greatest era. Catcher Buster Posey, who retired in November, is a lock to be the last Giants player to wear No. 28 and it’s possible two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum will have his No. 55 retired, too.Four-time All-Star Madison Bumgarner is the last Giant to wear No.
The Giants have several other players who contributed to multiple World Series championships and deserve recognition, but the highest honor fan favorites such as Matt Cain, Hunter Pence and Pablo Sandoval will receive is likely being honored on the Wall of Fame outside Oracle Park.
