Blake Sabol, Bryce Johnson and Sean Hjelle have inside track for final roster spots, Giants president indicates on Thursday night broadcast.

In addition to the added velocity, Hjelle has shown an increased ability to command his pitches, too. He’s struck out 18 batters and walked only two in 13 innings of work this spring, while limiting opponents to three earned runs, a 1.80 ERA. Only Alex Cobb has recorded more strikeouts, and only Ross Stripling, Anthony DeSclafani and Jakob Junis have better K:BB ratios.

Both Johnson and Sabol entered spring as long shots to make the roster, even with the impressive camps both have turned in. But, with injuries to Slater and Haniger, Johnson gives them a capable replacement in center field and Sabol can cash in on his red-hot swinging this spring with a more comfortable spot in left field and as a third catcher.

“Nothing was guaranteed of him, but he’s really taken to hear the idea of forcing the issue on the bases with the front office and putting himself in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot. … Obviously nothing’s official, but he’s right there.”
