SF Giants cut ties with Tommy La Stella; DFA’d owed $11.5M

Tommy La Stella’s injury-ravaged tenure with the San Francisco Giants came to a premature, but not entirely unexpected, end Wednesday.

The three-year, $18.75 million contract La Stella signed before the 2021 season — with a backloaded structure, meaning La Stella is due the bulk of it this season — will go down as one of the worst so far of the Farhan Zaidi era. Injuries prevented him from playing in half of the Giants’ games in either of his two seasons in San Francisco, and he struggled to live up to his past production when healthy.

The move makes room for Rogers, a left-handed reliever who teams up with his twin brother, righty Tyler, and gives the Giants the high-leverage arm they were seeking to pair with Camilo Doval in the back of their bullpen. Rogers, who will be introduced Friday over Zoom, will make $9 million in 2023 and $12 million in each of 2024 and ’25.

In two seasons in San Francisco, La Stella played in 136 games and batted .245/.297/.380 . Last season, after undergoing offseason surgery on both of his Achilles sheaths, La Stella started more games at designated hitter than anyone else , despite spending half of the season on the injured list.
