Curators hope their newest exhibit shows off the depth and diversity of the cultural phenomenon known as “Hallyu”

Don’t think K-pop, K-dramas or K-anything is for you? Curators of a just-opened exhibit at San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum aim to prove otherwise.

Curators’ catchphrase for the exhibit is “hallyu is for everyone.” In that vein, officials organized the exhibit so it speaks to the entire spectrum of K-pop fandom, from diehards who are regulars at KCON conventions to people who don’t know the difference between Blackpink and Pink Floyd. The “Hallyu!” presentation starts before viewers even arrive at the actual exhibit, with a photo booth near the entrance of the museum where patrons can snap hallyu-themed pictures of themselves, setting the tone for an experience grounded in self-expression and joy.

But historians point to the sudden arrival of the 2012 megahit song “Gangnam Style” — and its accompanying music video — as the moment hallyu transformed into a cultural phenomenon. Choi said that’s when hallyu became “global.” More aspiring SF parents’ insurance could soon cover IVF As soon as July 1, 2025, large-group insurance plans will be required to cover access to the procedure, among other fertility treatments

The exhibit isn’t limited to the confines of the actual gallery space. Staff have added a new limited-time kimchi fried-rice dish at the museum’s Asian Box restaurant as an homage to hallyu while the gallery is in town.
