Ilsa was still tracking as a category four system about 245 kilometres north of Port Hedland at 11:00am this morning, moving south-southwest at 16 kph, with sustained winds near its centre of 185 kph and wind gusts to 260 kph. A yellow cyclone alert is in place along more than 700km of coastline between an area south of Broome to Whim Creek, while residents in the populated mining town of Port Hedland are preparing to head into lock down.
The last category five cyclone to make landfall in WA was Cyclone Laurence in 2009 which made landfall along the same stretch of Eighty Mile Beach where Ilsa is expected to cross. The Bureau of Meteorology’s Todd Smith said an automated weather station at Rowley Shoals, 260 km west of Broome, had already recorded wind gusts up to 235 kph.Mr Smith said there was now “high confidence” the system would track to the south-east, and cross as a category five system near Pardoo Roadhouse later this evening.
