Large hail, frequent lightning and damaging wind gusts are the main threats of the thunderstorms that are moving into parts of the Garden State on Thursday.
The weather service says isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop later this afternoon and tonight, so the threat of large hail, frequent lightning and damaging wind gusts as strong as 60 to 70 mph remains on the table through later Thursday night.until 9 p.m. Thursday in seven New Jersey counties — Essex, Hunterdon, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Union and Warren — along with all of eastern Pennsylvania and the Hudson Valley in New York.
Another batch of rain showers and strong thunderstorms may develop Friday afternoon and Friday evening as well, forecasters said. But the stormy weather could bring an end to the heat wave that has gripped many areas of New Jersey this week. Thursday has been the fifth straight day that at least a portion of the Garden State has reached 90 degrees or hotter, and Friday could be the sixth.
The temperature at Newark Liberty International Airport soared to 96 degrees Thursday afternoon, after topping out at 97 degrees on Wednesday and 95 degrees on Tuesday, according to preliminary data from theIf today’s high is confirmed, it would mark a new daily record for Sept. 7.
