Forecasters from the National Weather Service say some of the storms Thursday night could produce small hail, heavy downpours and 60 mph wind gusts.
Prior to the warning, forecasters said a low pressure system moving across Pennsylvania was expected to trigger scattered thunderstorms late in the evening and early Thursday night.
Although they can pop up in almost any part of the region, the highest probability of strong or severe storms will likely be in the southern Poconos, the Lehigh Valley and northwestern New Jersey. Strong thunderstorms have developed Thursday night in Orange County, N.Y., just north of northern New Jersey, an area that got pounded by torrential rain just four days ago. Last Sunday, multiple towns in New Jersey received more than 3 inches of rain — and some got as much as 5 inches — in several hours when strong thunderstorms lashed the state. Among thewere 5.54 inches in Califon in Hunterdon County, 5.22 inches in Lebanon Township in Hunterdon, 5.10 inches in Hardyston in Sussex County, and 4.63 inches in Sparta, also in Sussex.
