The Malaysia n Meteorological Department, known as Met Malaysia, has issued a severe weather warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain fall, and strong winds that are expected to affect multiple areas across seven states until 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, June 2.
The warning, released earlier today, emphasizes the potential for flash floods, fallen trees, and damage to weak structures due to gusty winds. Residents in the affected regions are advised to remain vigilant and avoid outdoor activities during the storm period. The department also cautions that the weather conditions may intensify rapidly, leading to hazardous travel conditions, especially on highways and rural roads.
Local authorities have been alerted to prepare for possible emergencies, including the activation of flood response teams in low-lying areas. According to the statement, the weather conditions are expected to impact the entire state of Perlis. In Pahang, the warning specifically covers the Cameron Highlands, a popular tourist destination known for its tea plantations. For Kedah, the affected districts include Langkawi, Kubang Pasu, Kota Setar, Pokok Sena, Padang Terap, Yan, Pendang, Kuala Muda, and Sik.
In Perak, the warning applies to Larut, Matang and Selama, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, and Kampar. Meanwhile, Terengganu will see storms in Setiu, Kuala Nerus, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun, and Kemaman. The warning extends to East Malaysia as well. In Sabah, the West Coast region, specifically Ranau and Kota Belud, is under threat, along with Sandakan, which includes Telupid, Kinabatangan, Beluran, and Sandakan city, as well as Kudat.
In Sarawak, the affected areas are Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, which covers Subis, Beluru, Miri city, and Marudi, and Limbang. These regions are likely to experience sudden downpours and gusts exceeding 50 kilometers per hour, which could disrupt daily activities and infrastructure. MetMalaysia urges the public to stay updated through official channels and to adhere to guidelines from local authorities.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed and turn on headlights during heavy rain, while residents in flood-prone zones should prepare for possible evacuation. The department also recommends securing loose objects outdoors and avoiding sheltering under trees due to lightning risk. This weather event is part of the inter-monsoon season, characterized by convective storms that develop rapidly. The warning will remain in effect until the specified time, but updates may be issued if conditions worsen.
