At the DeSantis administration’s urging, the state Board of Medicine and the state Board of Osteopathic Medicine approved rules that prevent doctors from providing puberty blockers, hormone therapy, and specific surgical procedures to transgender minors.
The bills were among the most controversial issues of the 2023 legislative session, which ended May 5. One of the bills would go further by putting a prohibition on the treatments into state law.
DeSantis, who is widely seen as a top contender for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, has elevated the issue of treatment for transgender youths. As an example, he has referred to surgeries on transgender minors as “genital mutilation,” though experts have said the surgeries are exceptionally rare.
