Statistics Canada released its first round of 2021 census data on Wednesday, focusing on population and dwelling counts. Here are seven key take-aways from the latest data on population and dwellings.
About 1.8 million more people lived in Canada in 2021 than five years earlier. Of the new residents, four in five were new immigrants.Canadians and new immigrants continue to flock to cities, with 18 of the 25 largest municipalities in the country growing at a faster pace than the national average of 5.2 per cent.
Of Canada’s 25 largest municipalities, Brampton recorded the largest growth rate at 10.6 per cent between 2016 and 2021. More than 86 per cent of Canadians live in urban centres, while 13.3 per cent reside in rural areas.Two cities surpassed the one million population mark over the last census period. With 1,017,449 and 1,010,899 residents, respectfully, Ottawa and Edmonton joined Toronto, Calgary and Montreal as municipalities with a population of over one million.
