Spc. Mackenzie L. Shay, 20 of New Castle, was killed Saturday in an accident that involved multiple service vehicles, according to the Pennsylvania National Guard.
The National Guard said Shay was an Army petroleum supply specialist assigned to the 28th Infantry Division’s Company G, 128th Brigade Support Battalion. The three injured service members were treated and released from Penn State Hershey Medical Center, the National Guard said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Specialist Mackenzie Shay’s family, friends and colleagues after this tragic accident,” said Army Maj. Gen. Mark J. Schindler, the adjutant general of the Pennsylvania National Guard. “Our priority right now is taking care of the family and soldiers, ensuring they have all the resources they need during this critical time.”
The last time a death was reported at the Gap was in 2003 when a Pennsylvania National Guard soldier was killed in an accident while on annual training. Sgt. Rudolph B. Flaim, 25, of the 876th Engineer Battalion, Johnstown, died after a round of ammunition discharged from an M-2, 50-caliber machine gun. He had been moving equipment from one firing range to another for night exercises when he was shot in the head and chest.
