Dylan Joudieh’s short field goal with two seconds left lifts Serra to 24-21 victory over De La Salle
CONCORD — With his team trailing by two touchdowns after three quarters Friday night on the road against De La Salle, Serra coach Patrick Walsh gathered his players on the sideline.
They intercepted a pass — courtesy of De La Salle transfer Marley Alapati — in the waning minutes to give themselves a short field. Is it a changing of the guard? De La Salle, after all, hadn’t lost to a regional opponent in 30 years until St. Francis beat the Spartans last year.“I am not going there,” said Walsh, a De La Salle star running back in the early 1990s who was 0-10 against his alma mater as Serra’s coach. “I am definitely not going there. We’ll probably play them again this year. I am not going to say anything that will undercut the greatness that De La Salle is.
With Serra trailing 21-7, Smith led an 80-yard,16-play drive that included two fourth-down conversions. He scrambled to keep plays alive and showed off a cannon in his right arm on numerous passes, including the 3-yard strike to Joey Villaroman in front of the left pylon for the touchdown. “The game didn’t hinge on that one play,” De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh said. “That was a great high school football game. They ended up on top because they earned it more.”
