The rate of serious injury at Amazon’s Bessemer fulfillment center increased 43 percent from 2020 to 2021, even as workers there campaigned for a labor union.
That’s according to a new study from a coalition of labor unions that found Amazon employs a third of all warehouse workers in the U.S., but accounted for slightly less than half of all injuries for that sector of the economy.
The Service Employees International Union, International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Communications Workers of America, and United Farmworkers of America,The report analyzed 2021 injury data Amazon submitted to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The SOC compiled a similar report last year.
“Amazon’s obsession with speed has played a role in driving its injury rates higher. Amazon uses extensive productivity and monitoring systems to increase pressure on workers to move at dangerous speeds,” the report stated. “Like other companies in the industry, we saw an increase in recordable injuries during this time from 2020 to 2021 as we trained so many new people - however, when you compare 2021 to 2019, our recordable injury rate declined more than 13% year over year,” Nantel said.
