Clinical experts and justice officials fear the NDIS is ill-equipped to deal with sex offenders, putting the safety of the public and support workers at risk.

There’s no giveaway from the outside that this anonymous home in a sleepy Victorian regional town could soon house a dangerous sex offender.

It’s an issue that is being confronted around the country as the NDIS has assumed a growing role in supervising and supporting sex offenders who have been diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and serious mental illnesses.that serial sexual abusers, rapists and paedophiles have been receiving substantial support from the NDIS, sometimes worth more than $1 million, to live under supervision in the community after their release from detention.

Sworn evidence and judicial findings have repeatedly flagged concerns and the potential risks of relying on NDIS workers to manage the care and supervision of high-risk sex offenders with intellectual disabilities and complicated psychological and sexual diagnoses. It was noted in the court proceeding that the offender’s NDIS worker might be able to deter him from interacting with a potential victim but “they cannot stop him from doing so.”

“Health workers are not prison or parole officers – they shouldn’t have to deal with people and situations that put their health and wellbeing in jeopardy. One of the most frequent concerns raised is the specific threat posed to female NDIS workers. In another Queensland case, one offender had a tendency for “blurring the lines between the role of NDIS workers and sex workers.
