The Capitol Police in Washington have declared a state of emergency for the U.S. protests, although leaders of the Peoples Convoy said they had no violent intent.
“I think what started in Canada with Canadian truckers was powerful, it was inspirational, and it actually spoke volumes when government leaders tried to stomp it down. They were so scared of ordinary citizens standing up and speaking out. What y’all are doing is very much the same, it is important,” Cruz said, later adding that “almost without exception,” every time he rides an airplane, a staffer or the captain approaches him to hug him to thank him for his stance against vaccine mandates.
Biden has attempted to enforce a number of vaccine orders, including an order for all employers with more than 100 staff or for federal contractors to mandate biweekly testing or vaccination, but the Supreme Court stepped in to block the orders at least temporarily. The only Biden vaccine mandate in effect is for health care workers, although it, too, is facing legal challenges.
There is a long history of vaccine requirements in the United States, including most elementary schools, colleges and those seeking visas to enter certain foreign countries.
