Chicago musician Sen Morimoto has released “If The Answer Isn’t Love,” his first new single as a part of City Slang’s roster. The release follows his 2020 self-titled album, which he put out through Sooper Records—a label he co-founded with NNAMDÏ and Glenn Curran in 2016. The song precedes Morimoto’s forthcoming—but unannounced—third LP.
“If The Answer Isn’t Love” finds Morimoto blending jazz-pop with indie rock and reflecting on the disastrous landscape of our current world. With a climate crisis, war, a pandemic and inequity all around us, Morimoto points his compass towards finding love within it. “What will last / I know plenty must pass / Tell me, what can we have? / But if the answer isn’t love / Then forget that I asked,” he sings.
“In the face of imminent climate disaster, war and unending sickness it’s natural to start considering what will remain and what might have made it all worth it. I want the sound of my music to reflect that same urgency – instruments warbling and splattered over the beat, melodies tangled and contradicting. I wrote this song about the enduring power of love and the struggle to hang onto that feeling when in crisis,” Morimoto says.
