The Cardinals were forced to turn to rookie Christian Matthew and former practice squad players at cornerback Sunday in Denver.
It became clear on Sunday about 90 minutes before kickoff that the Arizona Cardinals were going to have three cornerbacks active for their game against the Denver Broncos, and none of them were the top three the Cardinals hoped to have on the field after the end of training camp.Instead of Byron Murphy Jr., Antonio Hamilton and Marco Wilson, the Cardinals turned to rookie Christian Matthew, Jace Whittaker and briefly, Nate Hairston.
"The standard's still the standard no matter who's in the game. We just tried to go out there, tried to be focused on our assignment, and at the end of the day, we're still NFL athletes. So there's a job that needs to be done," Matthew said. Hairston had been on the practice squad since September, then was elevated late last week with the Cardinals severely shorthanded at corner.Whittaker opened the season on the practice squad after being waived out of training camp. He was elevated to the active roster for each of the first three games of the season, then released from the practice squad on November 9.
"You've got to stay ready. That's the nature of the business that I'm in," Whittaker said right after Sunday's game."We know how we prepare. It's kind of one of those things that we've been waiting on that moment. The guys that are out, they are happy for us to be in that moment. 'Ham' wants it as bad as I do for myself."
