Adding the remaining $13 million of Scherzer’s salary for the remainder of this year will also push them over the $233 million payroll luxury tax threshold. The club was just above $230 million before adding Scherzer. They will pay a 20% tax on all payroll above $233 million.
The rotation, save for Nathan Eovaldi, has leaked badly lately. Martín Perez, who allowed four second-inning runs to San Diego Saturday, Jon Gray, Dane Dunning and Andrew Heaney have combined for a 5.92 ERA, 17 homers and 39 walks in 89.2 innings in July. The Rangers’ rotation began Saturday with a 5.12 ERA in July, 23rd in the majors. The Rangers haven’t had a quality start in 10 days.
Scherzer, who turned 39 on Thursday, effectively replaces former Met Jacob deGrom as the Rangers’ ace. DeGrom, but the club has soldiered on with Nate Eovaldi at the top of the rotation.
