Voters on Tuesday decided outcomes in several important races in Summit County and Akron, including: Akron City Council, Akron Public Schools board and the Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board replacement tax levy.

AKRON, Ohio – Voters in Summit County in Tuesday’s General Election decided the outcomes of several key races, among them: Akron City Council races, Akron Public Schools board and Issue 17, the Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board replacement tax levy.Voters selected incumbents Linda Omobien and Jeff Fusco to represent them in Akron City Council at-large seats, along with newcomer Eric Garrett, according to unofficial results from the Summit County Board of Elections.

Omobien, who has served on Council since 2009, received 10,092 votes . Fusco, who currently serves as Council vice president, received 9,896 . Garrett, who owns and operates Beyond Expectations Barber College, received 9,437 votes . Cynthia D. Blake, the sole Republican candidate running for an at-large seat, received 4,045 votes . Votes are based on all precincts reporting and are according to unofficial election results.

Most ward races saw candidates running unopposed, with the exception of the Ward 9 race, which saw Democratic candidate Tina R. Boyes best Republican candidate Micah R. Townsend. Boyes received 529 votes while Townsend received 158 , according to unofficial election results with all precincts reporting. Boyes will take over for Mike Freeman, who has served as the Ward 9 representative for more than 16 years. Freeman announced his retirement earlier this year.

The replacement levy will collect the same millage as the 2007 voted millage, however the rate homeowners pay will be based on home values in November 2023. The replacement levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $158 per year for the next six years, according to Support Summit DD Campaign Manager Billie Jo David. The funding will allow the board to support current individuals receiving services and account for an increased demand for services over the next six years, according to the board.
