Hamzah Zainudin says the act is still relevant given the recent uptick in sedition cases. FMTNews SeditionAct

KUALA LUMPUR: Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin says the Sedition Act will not be abolished as it is still relevant.

Speaking in the Dewan Rakyat here today, he said the act was especially important given the rise in fake news as well as the many different racial and religious groups in the country. He also said the spread of fake news could disrupt peace and security, especially when it concerns sensitive issues. Over the last two years, he said, there had been an increase in sedition cases involving the royalty, race, religion and the special rights enshrined in Articles 152, 153 and 181 of the Federal Constitution.“, 41 cases were charged, 171 classified as no further action, and 34 are still pending,” he said.Subscribe to our newsletter and get news delivered to your mailbox.
