The move comes as LaRose, who himself has a history of sharply criticizing Trump, has tried to shore up his pro-Trump bona fides while hoping the former president at least will remain neutral in the race.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Secretary of State Frank LaRose has parted ways with a top staffer after the staffer’s social media posts criticizing former President Donald Trump came to light.
LaRose’s office announced Wednesday that Rob Nichols, a longtime Republican operative in Ohio, no longer is the office’s press secretary, a job that includes the responsibility of dealing with the news media. Nichols’ interim replacement, Mary Cianciolo, said Wednesday morning that Nichols no longer works for LaRose’s office. She declined to provide further details, saying she can’t comment on personnel issues.
