A new epilogue to summer music festivals seems to be seeking treatment for a common STD. Areas around Stagecoach Music Festival in Indio, California, saw an increase in herpes inquiries and prescriptions according to HerpAlert, a diagnostics website.
Representatives from HerpAlert explained how a clear herpes increase makes sense at a weekend-long music festival in a conversation with Newsweek. “What we don't realize is how common the virus is and how the festival is the perfect situation for the virus to pop up with people who are already infected with the virus, as well as a perfect situation for the virus to be transmitted,” explained HerpAlert spokesperson Alexandra Harbushka.
Though herpes has been stigmatized, Harbuska added it is very common and treatable. “People need to know how common herpes really is and also know that it's just a skin disease,” she said. “Yes, you can get it from having a one-night stand, but you can also get it from your spouse, or from a family member kissing you as a child.
