As parts of the country grapple with wildfires and lingering smoke, Seattle city leaders say community safety needs to be a major priority as we enter wildfire season in the northwest.

"Our city’s location between mountain ranges helps to trap air pollutants like smoke, sometimes for weeks," said City Councilmember Lisa Herbold. "Seattle had the worst air quality last September in the entire world due to smoke from a fire in the eastern Cascade Range." During Tuesday's regular Seattle City Council meeting, the Public Safety and Human Services Committee was updated from the Office of Emergency Management on its plan for dealing with the challenges brought on my summer heat and wildfire smoke.The OEM gave a presentation and outlined how Seattle's infrastructure is not prepared for extreme heat and wildfire smoke, such as how more than half of Seattle home do not have air conditioning or filtration systems.

"During an extended severe wildfire smoke event, the city would work with regional partners to identify indoor spaces that have filtration and establish clean air spaces,” said Curry Mayer, director for the Office of Emergency Management. City department say also stop outdoor work, and the Washington Department of Labor & Industries is in the rulemaking process for permanent Wildfire Smoke rules.
