KOTA KINABALU: A search and rescue operation is underway for an angler who went missing after his boat capsized in strong waves off Pulau Mabul in Semporna.
A fellow angler, Salimin Paludin, managed to save himself and sought help from the authorities after contacting his brother about the 7am incident on Saturday .
Salimin, who managed to reach the shore, was rescued by villagers and handed over to marine police at 9.45am. He was sent to Semporna Hospital for observation. Semporna Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency commander Norrimi Hassan said that the search and rescue operation involving various agencies started at 1.30pm for the missing man identified as Mahmur Ajae, 44.
The search operation restarted at 7am on Sunday , he said, explaining that bad weather conditions and rough seas continue to hamper efforts to locate the missing man.The search involves nine vessels from the MMEA, Navy, marine police, and the Fire and Rescue Department.They had both gone to sea to fish on July 3 .
