Scream 7 is happening, but one significant change for the sequel is risky when considering what kind of narrative the previous reboot sequel built.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Scream 7 is officially happening with Christopher Landon at the helm, but the director change could become a major risk for Jenna Ortega and Melissa Barrera's next Scream installment. Coming off the heels of Scream 6, which performed exceedingly well at the box office, a third entry in Scream's reboot era was finally announced.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed both 2022's Scream and Scream 6, taking over for iconic filmmaker Wes Craven, who directed the first four movies in the Scream franchise. Following Craven's passing, any plans for future Scream movies were put on hold. Over a decade after Scream 4, Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett found a way to breathe new life into the beloved horror franchise, blending legacy characters and a new generation of victims being targeted by Ghostface.
Scream has always mixed in some goofy elements and incorporated characters that could be viewed as comedic relief such as Jamie Kennedy's Randy and his in-universe niece, Mindy . Granted, none of the movies to date would be considered a "horror comedy." The same certainly can't be said for some of Landon's previous works.
For Scream 7 to be a satisfying sequel to Ortega and Barrera's trilogy, the movie must keep hold of the darkness Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillet embraced. There is always an inherent risk when taking over as director in an established franchise. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett experienced it in 2022, but they had the advantage of being able to explore something relatively new for the franchise.
There's also an enhanced risk of derailing the journey these Scream reboot characters are on. History has proven that it's risky for movie franchises to change directors midway through a cohesive story–the Star Wars sequel trilogy being a recent example. Hopefully, Landon finds a way to continue the darker story of Ortega and Barrera's characters while making Scream 7 his own.
