Thanks to the satellite data, scientists were able to determine the presence of a hidden landscape from the initial insights. It revealed small undulations on the ice sheet's surface.Later, radio-echo sounding – a technique that involves sending radio waves through the ice and measuring the time it takes for the signals to bounce back, was also deployed from planes.
This historical terrain includes valleys and ridges similar in size and scale to the glacially-altered landscape in North Wales, UK. The finding suggests a consistent, long-term temperature stability of the ice sheet in the examined region. The professor went on to add that the newly spotted area may have experienced a lot of change in this particular region, further implying that the ice sheet may have retreated during warmer times in the past.
Neil Ross, professor of polar science and environmental geophysics at Newcastle University and the study’s co-author, stated:
