Sen. Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) raises national security alarms over the U.S. Army’s use of video-sharing app TikTok and other Chinese-owned social-media platforms for recruiting
By Katy Stech Ferek and Ben Kesling Nov. 12, 2019 2:24 pm ET Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is raising concerns about the U.S. Army’s use of video-sharing app TikTok and other China-owned social media platforms for recruiting efforts, citing the potential for personal data to be shared with the Chinese government.
Army recruiters have used TikTok for outreach, but they neither ask for nor share personal information over the platform and shift toward traditional forms of contact, like phone calls, to protect recruit information, an Army official said. TikTok, which is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance Technology Co., said it stores U.S. user data in the U.S. and Singapore. A TikTok spokesperson didn’t immediately respond to a request to comment about Mr. Schumer’s letter. The company has previously said that it operates independently of the Chinese government.
