The funds come from President Biden’s 2021 infrastructure law. Of the $1.2 trillion allocated by the law, $66 billion was marked for railway use. The tunnel grant is the largest sum ever awarded for a mass transit project. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the federal government will award $6.88 billion toward his treasured Hudson Tunnel Project.
The ambitious Gateway project is aimed at refurbishing the railways between New York and New Jersey, which are part of the heavily-trafficked Northeast Corridor. The existing train lines were badly damaged by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
