KUALA LUMPUR: Up to RM17bil can be saved from government coffers if it decides to implement a targeted subsidy mechanism for petrol, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
This was because Putrajaya spent RM50.8bil in subsidies for petrol, diesel and liquified petroleum gas last year, the Deputy Finance Minister said.The M40 group made up 41% of the RM50.8bil and the B40 group 24%, he added.
“You can imagine how the RM15bil to RM17bil can be used to assist Malaysians through programmes from all 26 ministries,” he said during Question Time in Parliament on Tuesday . Earlier, Ahmad told the House that last year, a total of RM66.3bil was spent for various forms of subsidies in petrol, diesel, LPG, cooking oil and electricity, as well as chicken and eggs.“But implementation that is not targeted has led to leakages,” he added.
