NBC's longtime variety show Saturday Night Live is getting a movie about the behind-the-scenes chaos leading to the series' first episode.
A movie about Saturday Night Live's first-ever episode is currently in development. Since its debut in 1975, the NBC variety show has been a staple of network television. Boasting an ever-fluctuating cast of repertory players, Saturday Night Live began the careers of many prominent film and television stars, including Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Jon Belushi, Martin Short, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Eddie Murphy, and among many others.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Per Deadline, a movie taking a look behind-the-scenes of Saturday Night Live's first night in 1975 is currently in the works. Set on October 11, 1975, the film will chronicle the chaotic moments at Studio 8H leading up to Chevy Chase kicking off the show with the iconic line, "Live from New York, it's Saturday Night.
What To Expect From The Saturday Night Live Movie Given Johnny Carson's desire to take time off during the work week, NBC approached Lorne Michaels to create a show to fill the Saturday evening slot instead of showing The Tonight Show reruns. Working with network executive Dick Ebersol, the pair developed a variety show, mixing sketch comedy, music performances, and political satire with celebrity hosts.
Many of the show's original players and crew used drugs to help them cope with the frantic pace of the variety show's schedule as writers scramble to come up with ideas, production designers are challenged to build sets for frequently changing sketches, and cast members must meet the pressure of rehearsing and performing all in one night.
