STC Chief Mark Arcand says there are people whose addictions issues and potential for violence make them unmanageable in current facilities.

Staff from Dakota Dunes casino and the SIGA central offices in Saskatoon were on hand Wednesday to run the grills and serve meals.

Arcand said he viewed the event as “a celebration” of people coming together to help out on the “tough file” of homelessness in Saskatoon. Arcand said on any given night there might be 30 to 40 people with complex needs in the 106-bed wellness centre, and others turned away.calling for funding of spaces to house complex needs individuals, noting a lack of facilities creates potentially dangerous situations and drains police resources.Article content

A facility for people with complex needs would also require medically trained staff capable of managing patients experiencing psychosis, Arcand said, adding these are not available in the current wellness centre’s budget.
