KUCHING: Water authorities in Sarawak have been placed on alert to monitor supply facilities during the current hot and dry spell, which is forecast to last until August.

State Utilities and Telecommunication Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department , Kuching Water Board, Sibu Water Board and LAKU Management Sdn Bhd had activated their respective action plans to mitigate the impact of the dry season on consumers' water supply.

"In addition, several water treatment plants may be affected by insufficient raw water and could reach a critical stage, such as the Melugu and Pantu water treatment plants in Sri Aman and Penibong WTP in Mukah if there is still no rain in the coming weeks. Julaihi urged community leaders and consumers to immediately report to their respective water authorities should they encounter very low pressure or supply disruption, so that immediate action can be taken.

"We are concerned by water problems during the dry spell. The matter has also been taken up by the state disaster management committee.
