Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) has completed the transfer of ownership of MASwings to the Sarawak government, marking a significant development in the state's aviation sector. The transfer, finalized through a share sale agreement (SPA), allows Sarawak to establish its own airline, AirBorneo, which aims to strengthen regional connectivity and boost tourism in the state.

Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of MASwings, has signed a share sale agreement (SPA) with the Sarawak government for the transfer of ownership of MASwings. This follows a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed with the Sarawak government and Hornbill Skyways on October 27, 2023.

The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of the year, with MAG working closely with all stakeholders, including shareholder Khazanah Nasional Berhad, to ensure a smooth transition and compliance with all relevant legal and regulatory frameworks. During this transition period, MASwings will continue to operate as usual under the purview of MAG, without disruption to flight schedules, ensuring uninterrupted air services for communities that rely on them. MAG said it remains committed to a smooth handover and supporting the long-term growth of Malaysia's aviation and tourism sector for the benefit of the people. Behind this transition, MAG will continue to strengthen the country's aviation landscape through its airline subsidiaries, Malaysia Airlines, Firefly, and Amal, consolidating Malaysia's position as a major player in regional and global connectivity. Meanwhile, Sarawak-based media reported that Sarawak officially announced the name of its new airline, AirBorneo, after Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg signed the SPA between the Sarawak government and MAG at Hilton Hotel today. The signing was witnessed by the Sarawak Secretary, Datuk Amar Mohammad Abu Bakar Marzuki, representing the Sarawak government, who is also the Chairman of AirBorneo, while the Group Managing Director of MAG, Datuk Kapten Izham Ismail, represented MAG. Abang Johari stated that the selection of the new Sarawak airline's name takes into account the states of Sabah and Kalimantan
