Sarawak gets RM1.2bil in state sales tax from Petronas FMTNews FMTBusiness
The Sarawak state government imposed a state sales tax on petroleum products after a High Court ruling in 2020 that upheld its right to do so.
PETALING JAYA: Petronas and its subsidiaries have paid the Sarawak government RM1.2 billion in state sales tax on petroleum products for the first quarter of 2023. Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said this was in line with Petronas’ commitment toward supporting Sarawak’s aspirations to develop a stable business and investment ecosystem.
“This would allow the state government to be more actively involved in attracting investments for Sarawak’s oil and gas industry,” she said in a written Dewan Rakyat reply to Ali Biju who asked about the amount of SST Petronas has paid Sarawak. In August 2020, Petronas withdrew its appeal against the Kuching High Court’s ruling that Sarawak was entitled to collect sales tax on petroleum products, thus recognising the state’s constitutional power to impose the tax.
