Sarah Huckabee Sanders said closing the U.S.-Mexico border is not the White House's 'first choice'
Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday that closing the United States-Mexico border, a step President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened, is not the White House’s “first choice.”
Trump threatened last week to close the southern border if Mexico did not do more to stop the flood of Central American migrants makings their way to the United States.“This isn’t our first choice,” Sanders told reporters outside the White House. “Our first choice would be for Democrats to actually sit down with us and help fix a broken system to address the national security and humanitarian crisis that exists at our border.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike have expressed concerns over Trump’s proposal to close the U.S.-Mexico border, arguing that closing the border could have a disastrous impact on the economy. An estimated $502 billion in goods — about $1.4 billion a day — crossed the border through trucks and trains last year, according to the Commerce Department.
Sanders said Trump doesn’t want to hurt the U.S. economy, but that his No. 1 job “is to protect life and to protect Americans.” The press secretary would not offer a specific timeline for Trump’s proposed plan. “The president has spent the last two years helping build up this economy and helping create the boom we have,” Sanders said. “He certainly doesn’t want to hurt that.”
