SAN DIEGO – Despite promises to the public, SANDAG leaders have not yet removed a controversial mileage tax from the $165 billion Regional Transportation Plan.

The Democrat-led SANDAG Board passed the plan nearly two years ago with the promise of removing the mileage tax within six months and replacing it with another method of funding. SANDAG Board member and San Marcos Mayor Rebecca Jones joined KUSI’s Kacey McKinnon to explain why at this point, SANDAG needs to remove the unpopular mileage tax from the subsequent 2025 plan in addition to the 2021 plan.

The mileage tax, sometimes referred to as a road user charge, is unpopular among many, and Democrats like Supervisor Terra Lawson-Remer have publicly come out against it. Republicans on the SANDAG Board have fought against the mileage tax since the plan was developed.
