A power outage at the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport on Saturday night that left passengers stuck on taxiways and unable to board their planes appears to have been caused by a vehicle that hit a nearby power pole.
The outage, which began at about 7:30 p.m. Saturday, cut power to the airport for a little more than an hour, according to Ana State, a spokesperson for the airport. Passengers could not get through security screening stations, nor could they board or get off of plans, she said. A vehicle hit a power pole near the airport, and emergency crews requested that the line be de-energized so that the vehicle could be safely removed, according to Karly Hernandez, Pacific Gas & Electric spokesperson. No further details of the crash were immediately available. The airport does have a backup power system, though it is not large enough to power the entire airport, she said.
