The Mexican national team on Saturday night, possibly the U.S. national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup semifinal on July 12, Manchester United on July 25 … and now German power Borussia Dortmund.
The twist on the latest game, on July 27 at 7:30 p.m. featuring U.S. star Gio Reyna and Dortmund, is that the opponent will be local pro club San Diego Loyal. Tickets go on sale Friday at 9 a.m. via Ticketmaster.Dortmund decided to base its North American preseason tour in San Diego, training for a week before heading to Las Vegas to play Manchester United on June 30 and then Chelsea in Chicago on Aug. 4. It wanted a third game and wanted a local opponent.
It’s a huge opportunity for the Loyal, which plays in the de facto second division USL Championship and has home games at USD’s 6,000-seat Torero Stadium. In its fourth year of existence, the Loyal has faced Mexico’s Tijuana Xolos and a couple Major League Soccer teams in the U.S. Open Cup, but never an opponent of Dortmund’s global stature.
