It was all smiles and good cheer last fall, when officials from the hugely regarded Brookings Institution think tank joined the venerable San Diego Foundation in publicly announcing a bold new partnership.
The idea was to tackle some of the community’s most vexing issues using research-driven data to design remedies and encourage public agencies to combine resources and implement those policies.
One of them was Shalini Vajjhala, a former professor at Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon universities who also served three years in the Obama administration. Among other allegations, Vajjhala accused them of ignoring conflicts of interest, booking revenue before it had been received and commingling foundation and center finances.
“The defendants were aware of the probable dangerous consequences of their conduct and willfully and deliberately failed to avoid those consequences,” it added. The San Diego Foundation was established in 1975 by civic leaders interested in serving community needs and promoting philanthropic causes. Its endowment now exceeds $1.3 billion.
“Plaintiff was not subjected to any retaliatory conduct, no private information was made public and she was not wrongfully terminated,” the reply brief said. The decision to place Vajjhala on leave was not welcomed by all of her employees. Two senior staffers quit within weeks, according to internal documents obtained by The San Diego Union-Tribune.
