Bob Kerrigan won biggest game in history of PCL's Padres; he now rests at urban park honoring Lane Field
I was celebrating my granddaughter’s birthday at Perry's Cafe when an elderly gentleman approached our table. 'I know you,' he announced. 'You’re the guy who buried an old Padre player at Lane Field.' Startled by his comment, I asked for clarification — and an introduction. Dick Canfield, then 99, told me he heard about my caper from a mutual friend. “Bob Kerrigan’s wife told me about it and told me not to tell anyone,' he said.
I dug a hole, poured Bob in and covered him with dirt. Josephine was certain we would all be arrested. That evening, undetected, we shared stories, drank beer, smoked cigars , laughed and, like we did at Bob’s funeral, sang “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.” Everyone vowed to never share our secret. A few days later, the plaque was dedicated. Nobody else knew Bob was laughing under it. It took more than 50 years to decide that two hotels should be built on this fallow bayfront property.
