A quarter of the okapi's habitat in the Congo Basin Rainforest could be destroyed by 2050.

The male okapi calf interacts with one of its parents this week at the San Antonio Zoo.

Born Saturday, the calf is the first son of parents Ludimi and Epulu. Zoo officials described the birth of the animal, which resembles a cross between a deer and a zebra, as a win for zoological conservation. "We are absolutely thrilled to welcome this adorable okapi calf into our San Antonio Zoo family," San Antonio Zoo President and CEO Tim Morrow said in an emailed statement.
