San Antonio’s Jesse ‘Bam’ Rodriguez, Ricky Medina highlight weekend card at Tech Port Center + Arena
Medina had already started dipping his toe into boxing under the guidance of his father, who was also coaching the football team. When Rodriguez and his brother Joshua Franco showed interest in boxing, they joined Medina in his training, forming a bond between Medina and Rodriguez that persisted through the amateur ranks and the early stages of their professional careers.
“It means a lot to not only the both of us, but to the city of San Antonio to have two fighters from the city performing on a worldwide platform,” Rodriguez, 22, said. “It’s big for the city, and we’re going to perform, and we’re going to show off for San Antonio.” Medina said the shift was another reminder that Saturday is “my time to shine,” understanding what a win in his first matchup against an undefeated top prospect could mean for his career.
Being in front of his home crowd, Medina said he expects to feel the support from his friends and family as he pursues his first titles. Ford said entering a bout with fans backing his opponent is nothing new, as he knocked out Reece Bellotti last August in his home of the United Kingdom and fought to a draw against native Texan Aaron Perez last March in Dallas.
